Superman's product of the century (so far):
There was a monster sunsport traversing the sun that I posted about at the end of April. Friend Nathan thought it looked like the Eye of Sauron.
This week the Hubble space telescope folks released some pictures it took using its (Advanced Camera for Surveys) ACS coronagraph masking technique to expose the debris ring around the nearby star Fomalhaut (a star in the Southern Fish constellation Piscis Austrinus).
How about that one Nathan? Feel like the Ringlord is watching?

On further investigation, there is a significant mystery relative to this star and these photographs. Scientists are convinced that there must be a large planet orbiting this star because the debris ring is offset from the gravitational center of the star.

Though the coronograph shields the strongly emitted light from the star there are still light rays scattered around the ring - but the entire ring seems to be pulled (down and to the left in this illustrated photo) from the star. Observing scientists surmise that some other gravitational pull must be causing this.
To provide a sense of the scope of this visible phenomena, this picture overlays our own solar system onto the Fomalhaut system. As you can see, the distance to the inner part of the ring of the Fomalhaut system is vastly larger than our own solar system - some 4 diameters more than the entire Kuiper belt.
The sought after planet is as yet undetected. Observations will be made again to complete the observation of the ring this summer (you can see that some of the area has not yet been scanned) and it is hoped that the gravitational mystery will be solved.
I'm wondering if there is some other explanation than a planet for this observation. (It's OK, that's just me :) ).
