WARNING: THIS SITE FEATURES ORIGINAL THINKING...Jim Croce once sang Don't tug on Superman's cape..., which seems like reasonable advice should we not wish to anger the supreme powers. We do have this duality in our culture: the Superman that is the state collective, the leftist call to a politics of meaning managed by the state, the deification of "we're from the government and we'll take care of you" - versus the Superman that celebrates individual freedom, private property, freedom of conscience, free enterprise, and limited government. We humbly take on the latter's mantle and, eschewing the feeble tug, we dare to PULL, in hope of seeing freedom's rescue from the encroaching nanny state. We invite you, dear reader, to come and pull as well... Additionally, if you assume that means that we are unflinching, unquestioning GOP zombies, that would be incorrect. We reject statism in any form and call on individuals in our country to return to the original, classical liberalism of our founders. (We're also passionate about art, photography, cooking, technology, Judeo/Christian values, and satire as unique, individual pursuits of happiness to celebrate.)

Olympic National Park: Did the beaches drive them mad?
Filed in: Current Affairs, Photography

I have often said that it was my first glimpse of Mount Rainier as I drove across the I-90 bridge for the first time in August of 1982 that instilled a yearning within me to move to the Pacific Northwest. I have never heard that from anyone else that I have ever met.

However, several people have told me (one a prominent NW blogger) that seeing Ruby Beach for the first time did that very thing for them.

Ruby Beach is on the far west of the west coast of the Washington peninsula.

And the viewpoint to the beach does present one of the most picturesque images of the ocean anywhere in the world.

The sun was bright at the Hoh Rain Forest as you could see from the pictures in that post. But at the coastal area of the park - the fog was moving in...

Dsc_02250028

The fog really added an extra dimension of mystery to this beautiful place.

These are affectionately or derogatorily known as 'tree bones' to many Northwesterners - and they are characteristic of many of the Washington beaches. They are the detritus of the work of rivers unaccompanied by the saws of the woodsmen. For various reasons, these trees became captured by currents and are moved from place to place by floods and tides.

I can't resist including the covered sun before leaving this place.

Farther south, the world has become almost monochrome because of the fog. This is Kalaloch Beach (pronounced Clay-Lock) in it's own serene beauty.

It has it's own tree bones like so many pick-up sticks from a game between giants.

For many, the Washington beaches are a surprise - perhaps they are accustomed to long stretches of sand or populous areas where hotels reach down to the shore. The Washington beaches are fierce and natural - places preserved for all time where the trees march down to the sea and sometimes become part of the ocean landscape.

Very nice set of pics. I'll have to get out there someday (in my copious free time).

And it's an "L"... :)

EMCEE: Oops! Apparently I can't tell the difference between 'ji', and 'jl' - slippery little 'j' that! - I really like your pics as well. You say Cascades mostly - where do you photograph most?

Posted by: JLB at Aug 28, 2005 9:43:38 PM

I photograph mostly out Steven's and Snoqualmie Passes and points in between, with occational trips over to the peninsula to the Poulsbo/Port Gamble area (where my parents live). Then there's my garden, and any local nursery that has stuff blooming - I love taking macro shots of flowers and plants. I'm going to try to get up to Mt. Baker in the next month or so too, if I can manage it. So many things to photograph, so little time!
